Fresh in the current trading session. The story has cross-source confirmation.
TL;DR: Metaplanet disclosed that it sold 10,000 BTC during the third quarter for roughly $790 million before buying 11,000 BTC for around $950 million. The company says the exercise was designed to demonstrate that its Bitcoin treasury can provide liquidity when required, while leaving it with a net increase of 1,000 BTC.
Bitcoin treasury companies are usually judged by how much BTC they buy.
Metaplanet has just demonstrated something different: how quickly a very large Bitcoin position can be converted into liquidity and then rebuilt.
The Japanese-listed company disclosed that during the third quarter it sold 10,000 BTC for approximately ¥124.7 billion, or around $790 million.
It subsequently purchased 11,000 BTC for roughly ¥149.9 billion, equivalent to around $950 million.
The result was unusual.
Metaplanet temporarily moved a huge quantity of Bitcoin out of its treasury, proved that it could turn those holdings into cash at scale, then finished the exercise with 1,000 more BTC than it had before the transactions.
The company ended the quarter holding 44,000 BTC.
Metaplanet described the operation as a demonstration of liquidity.
That matters because the corporate Bitcoin model inevitably creates questions about what happens when a company needs cash.
Holding billions of dollars of BTC can make a balance sheet look exceptionally liquid in theory, but creditors and rating agencies also care about whether those assets can be mobilized in practice without disrupting the company’s broader capital structure.
Metaplanet said proceeds from the 10,000 BTC sale exceeded the outstanding principal of its bonds, borrowings and other interest-bearing liabilities.
In other words, the company used the transaction to show that its Bitcoin position could cover its debt obligations if necessary.
The disclosure arrived alongside a broader change in capital allocation policy.
Metaplanet is preparing to put roughly 10% to 15% of its assets into strategic investments outside Bitcoin, including income-generating opportunities.
That does not mean the company is abandoning its Bitcoin treasury strategy.
Quite the opposite.
Selling 10,000 BTC and ending up with 11,000 BTC back on the books suggests the company wanted to prove flexibility without reducing its overall exposure.
The exercise also illustrates how the corporate Bitcoin model is maturing.
Accumulation remains the headline metric, but companies holding tens of thousands of BTC eventually need policies covering liquidity, leverage, income generation and risk management.
Metaplanet has now shown investors what one version of that can look like.
Its treasury is not simply a vault designed to accumulate Bitcoin indefinitely.
The company wants it to function as active financial infrastructure.
Why this matters
Bitcoin is showing up inside the Institutional Adoption theme, so this story is worth tracking for follow-through rather than treating it as a one-off headline.
