The wallet provider said the problem is under investigation and will be fixed through relationship work done in collaboration with outside service providers and security advisors, and emphasized that users are not immediately at risk for MetaMask wallets.
MetaMask Takes Validators Offline After Security IncidentMetaMask has yet to reveal the nature, cause or extent of the event. The issue is impacting some of its infrastructure and the company is working to contain and address the issue internally, it said.
To safeguard itself, MetaMask is scaling down its validators of its non-custodial staking service.
The change should help lower possible risk of exposure until the investigation concludes but so far, the company hasn’t said that any funds or wallet users are being compromised.
MetaMask’s model is also non-custodial, which it noted. Withdrawal keys for the assets they stake are not managed by the company.

Wallet Users Face No Immediate ThreatMetaMask specifically separated the infrastructure incident from its wallet product.
There is a significant distinction, however, in that the company did not detect any apparent immediate issue with wallets in their use of MetaMask it says, which is important because of the number of people using wallets and the position of the wallet in the Ethereum ecosystem.
The company hasn’t made any user movements, wallet or other emergency measure requirements. MetaMask stated it will monitor the situation and share more additional information if appropriate.
Lido Validators Enter Exit ProcessMetaMask Staking validators also saw the impact from the security measures taken by the Lido protocol. MetaMask began proactively taking measures with its operated validators regarding Ethereum, such as initiating withdrawals, said Lido.
Lido provided timeline updates on other affected validators, stating that the final affected validators will exit by October 7, 2021. ETH that is taken off the affected validators is not presumed to be immediately returned to the protocol, but a phase where it is slowly made available to the network is assumed.
Ethereum Re-Entry Could Take Up to 45 DaysOnce they have withdrawn, the funds then have to pass through the Ethereum process of validators entering, and their funds being withdrawn. Since the current validator entry queue, Lido hopes up to 45 days for the full withdrawal and re-entry process.
This does not mean the report of a lost ETH has been made. Rather, it represents the dynamics of withdrawing validators from the Ethereum protocol to withdraw later on the validators.
MetaMask has so far resolved to view the validator exits as a precautionary security feature, not a security flaw affecting the user’s wallets or their ability to withdraw funds.
