The Commodity Futures Trading Commission approved Coinbase Clearing LLC as a derivatives clearing organization on Monday, giving Coinbase a clearinghouse of its own in the U.S. The order limits it to fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps.
Under the CFTC’s definition, a position is fully collateralized when the clearinghouse holds, at all times, enough money to cover the most a trader could lose on it. That rules out trading on margin. Coinbase said in its application to the regulator that full collateral removes “the need to calculate variation margin levels or maintain a default fund,” which it said makes it simpler to clear for traders directly.

Coinbase Now Owns the Exchange, Broker and ClearinghouseCoinbase already runs a futures exchange, Coinbase Derivatives, and a futures broker, Coinbase Financial Markets. With a clearinghouse added, the company said it can “create and settle fully collateralized contracts directly” for the first time. Coinbase called the new entity “the first USDC-native clearinghouse,” which it says will take the stablecoin as collateral and settle 24/7.
“Today’s CFTC approval completes Coinbase’s end-to-end derivatives infrastructure, enabling us to bring more regulated derivatives products to market with native USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement,” Molly Abraham, Coinbase’s general counsel, said in the post.
Leveraged Products Stay With PartnersThe approval does not reach Coinbase’s leveraged business. Coinbase said it will keep relying on existing partners for its margined derivatives and for the single-stock perpetual futures it plans to launch. Nodal Clear is the clearinghouse for Coinbase Derivatives and began clearing round-the-clock trading in some of its crypto futures in May 2025. Coinbase said earlier this month it had filed with the SEC to offer U.S. customers perpetual futures on single stocks.
The order also lets the CFTC condition, modify, suspend or terminate the order’s terms on its own motion, and says any new or amended CFTC rule affecting it would override the affected terms.
