US bank closes customers’ accountsAccording to reports, a US financial company and two British banks are currently under investigation for allegedly debanking clients due to their political beliefs.
The banking division of American Express, alongside Metro Bank and Yorkshire Building in the UK, are being probed by Her Majesty’s (HM) Treasury.
This follows growing concerns about the practice of politically motivated unbanking.
The inquiry is focused on whether customers had their accounts unjustly suspended or terminated, and The Telegraph has highlighted particular allegations that may be linked to the investigation.
Metro Bank is accused of shuttering bank accounts linked to the political party Reform UK in 2021, and UKIP leader Nigel Farage’s claims that the Brexit Party’s Metro accounts were closed in 2020.
Recently, Nigel Farage had his accounts at Coutts Bank closed due to staff members stating that his views do not align with their values.
Furthermore, Richard Tice, leader of Reform UK, had his American Express account cut off after the firm requested specific documents from him, which he refused to provide.
Additionally, Yorkshire Building Society closed the account of Reverend Richard Fothergill after he inquired about the bank’s support for trans individuals and their celebration of Pride month.
However, the bank has not disclosed the exact reason for halting his account.
US banks freeze accounts, halting withdrawalsAccording to a recent report, American banks are closing their customers’ accounts and limiting their withdrawals without warning.
This alarming trend is affecting a growing number of individuals who discover they can no longer access their checking and savings accounts, as reported by CBS Los Angeles.
For example, Elad Nehorai received a worrisome notification when he attempted to log into his Bank of America account. Upon visiting a branch in West LA, he was informed that his account had been closed and his hard-earned savings were no longer available to him.
