The announcement comes alongside new survey data showing strong interest in stablecoins among Hong Kong consumers, even as concerns around regulation and security remain.
HSBC Introduces RedCoin Ahead of Stablecoin LaunchThe upcoming HSBC dollar stablecoin will be called HSBC RedCoin owing the brand name of the Bank and its enduring presence in Hong Kong, the bank confirmed.
The stablecoin has not been made available yet. The token will be released under a stablecoins licence issued earlier this year by HSBC and will be introduced in the second half of 2026. The initial rollout will be to the PayMe platform and the HSBC HK Mobile App.
HSBC says they will take first cut at the basic payment features in the initial phase. The app will also enable users to transfer funds among themselves and pay merchants with the stablecoin. Later in the stages it is thought that more advanced use cases involving corporate and institutional transactions will emerge.
Bruce Maggie Ng, the CEO of HSBC Hong Kong, said that launching the new offering is a part of the bank’s strategy to enable financial innovation while retaining the trust and security of traditional financial institutions.

Survey Reveals Strong Stablecoin AwarenessThe naming came with a study surveying 1,060 HSBC customers aged 18 to 64. 74% of respondents noted they could see at least one practical use for stablecoins, the results indicated. The most popular were person-to-person transfers with 0.53% and digital asset trading at 0.57%.
Both cross-border remittances paced at 52% showed that stablecoins are also becoming a means of payment for consumers, not just a speculative investment.
Knowledge Gaps Still ExistYet misconceptions were discovered with the survey even after increased awareness. 26% identified a stablecoin as a fiat-issued digital asset, though 60% did. The other 10% believed that stablecoins do this naturally and automatically for their owners.
The results indicate the need for more education about stables and highlight areas where there is a growing understanding of the products. This is especially relevant considering Hong Kong’s focus on the full emergence of regulated crypto products.
Security and Regulation Remain Top PrioritiesGeneral sentiments surrounding consumer confidence were a central theme in HSBC’s study. Among those asked what would build trust in stablecoins, 53% replied with better fraud prevention. Additionally, 51% pointed to the ease of being able to convert stablecoins back into cash and 39% to transparency concerning reserves assets.
The findings are consistent with the digital asset regulatory stance of Hong Kong, where investor protection and regulatory oversight are key concerns.
RedCoin Begins with Retail PaymentsResults of the survey are echoed in HSBC’s rollout plan. The bank will initially look at payment applications that are easily understood by consumers before moving on to complex institutional offerings. P2P transfers and P2M payments are activities familiar to many users which might pave the way for stablecoins.
The bank will also introduce an education initiative on the redemption mechanism, stablecoin basics and how to avoid scams.
