Follow us on Google NewsMastercard has announced a new security product that strengthens the stablecoin infrastructure, specifically for banks and payment providers. Announced at Money20/20 USA, Stablecoin Security is designed to give financial institutions a clearer view of risk across both fiat and blockchain payment flows.
Mastercard Targets the Hidden Complexity of Stablecoin PaymentsTraversal risk has become a problem with cross-border payments that use different wallets, providers and blockchain addresses, while stablecoins are making cross-border payments even faster.
Mastercard cited a study that examined 593 million transaction events involving stablecoins on 141 million Ethereum transactions in 2025. Almost 60% carried out complex multi-step activity rather than just wallet-to-wallet transfers.
The complexity can pose difficulties for banks to detect fraud, exposure to scam or sanctioned entities, or other indicators of financial crime before a payment is made.
Mastercard’s new system does that by bringing blockchain data together with the commerce intelligence already released all through the traditional monetary system.

Risk Scores Arrive Before Funds Move OnchainStablecoin Security is offered via an application program interface (API) approach and is said to be platform-agnostic to allow banks to link it into their current fraud and compliance systems.
The product reviews examines such things as transaction context, where the cash is coming from, people that are involved in the transactions that are restricted and signs that are associated with scams. It can then calculate a risk score prior to settlement, allowing institutions to proceed ahead with a payment or for it to go for a second review.
This is especially true for stablecoin transfers, since if money is transferred onchain, then it may be much harder to reverse a fraudulent transaction than to prevent one.
Mastercard claims institutions can integrate the service into existing compliance and case-management teams, and into their systems, without building a new operating system for crypto payments.
Borderless and Keyrails Bring Stablecoin Security Into Live Payment FlowsSo far Borderless.xyz and Keyrails are the first companies doing so. Borderless links financial institutions with over 113 countries and 72 currencies with licensed stablecoin providers and Keyrails specializes in cross-border trade payments across high-value markets, particularly within emerging markets.
Their engagement provides Mastercard with a head-start in real-world stablecoin settlement applications such as supplier payments and global trade, thereby positioning them for greater traction in that space now.
Mastercard Plans Global Stablecoin Security Rollout in 2027Stablecoin Security is rolling out first in North America, and will be available commercially across the world in 2027. Also announced is Mastercard’s intentions to increase its distribution via BVNK, the blockchain underlying the stablecoin platform that it purchased in August 2026.
As banks continue to venture into the blockchain-based settlement space, the product is part of a larger digital asset security offering that includes Mastercard Crypto Credential and Crypto Secure.
