Bitcoin Futures Open Interest Slips To $7.68 Billion As Traders Keep Funding Positive

TL;DR: A Saturday derivatives snapshot showed Bitcoin open interest at $7.68 billion, down 0.69% in 24 hours. Funding remained positive, but the data does not establish that traders have finished reducing leverage.

Bitcoin‘s derivatives market is heading through the weekend with slightly less leverage outstanding, though not with an outright bearish positioning signal.

A market snapshot at 11:00 UTC on Saturday, October 17, put Bitcoin futures open interest at $7.68 billion, a 0.69% decline over 24 hours. The same survey recorded a positive funding rate of 0.0035% per eight-hour interval, meaning long positions were paying shorts on the perpetual contracts represented in the sample.

Those two readings describe different things. Falling open interest means contracts are being closed or reduced; positive funding indicates a continued willingness among leveraged buyers to pay for exposure. Neither statistic, by itself, predicts Bitcoin’s next price move.

Bitcoin’s long-account share was 63.2% in the surveyed market data. That is a measure of accounts, not a claim that nearly two-thirds of all capital or contracts sat on the long side. Every derivatives contract necessarily has a buyer and seller, which is why that distinction matters.

There was also a wider reduction in risk across the market. Solana open interest fell 4.25% to about $929.5 million during the same observation period, a considerably larger percentage decline than Bitcoin’s.

Weekend liquidity can make short-lived moves more dramatic, but the snapshot offers no basis for assuming a liquidation event is over or that any particular support price will hold. Traders will get a clearer read when normal weekday volumes return.

Why this matters

Bitcoin is showing up inside the Market Structure theme, so this story is worth tracking for follow-through rather than treating it as a one-off headline.
