Ramaswamy’s departure leaves Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk as the sole leaders of the advisory body, which aims to overhaul federal spending under President Donald Trump’s administration.
Ramaswamy’s Political AspirationsRamaswamy announced his resignation in a post on X on January 20, expressing confidence in Musk’s ability to lead the department. “It was my honor to help support the creation of DOGE,” he stated. “I am confident that Elon and the team will do a great job at streamlining the government.” Teasing future plans, he added he would “have more to say very soon,” but repeated his support for Trump.

According to reports from CBS News and The New York Times, Ramaswamy plans to run for governor of Ohio. The current governor of the state, Mike DeWine, is in his last stretch of his second term that concludes in January 2027.
Anna Kelly, a DOGE spokesperson, wouldn’t stop gushing about the development: “Vivek Ramaswamy played a critical role in helping us create DOGE. He intends to run for elected office soon, which requires him to remain outside of DOGE based on the structure we announced today.”

Tensions Between Ramaswamy and MuskRamaswamy’s departure comes amid reports of friction between the two leaders. According to Politico, Musk had pushed for Ramaswamy’s exit in recent days, following disagreements over the tech industry’s hiring practices. Ramaswamy had previously criticized American companies for what he described as a preference for foreign workers, accusing them of fostering a “culture of mediocrity.”

A Republican strategist close to Trump’s advisers described Ramaswamy as a polarizing figure, claiming, “He just burned through bridges and finally burned Elon. Everyone wants him out of Mar-a-Lago and D.C.”
Legal and Ethical Scrutiny Surrounding DOGEThe DOGE project, announced within weeks of Trump’s election victory, aimed to eliminate redundancies in federal spending by making government operations more efficient. It has been marred by legal and ethical challenges, though.
The DOGE was sued within minutes of its formal launch by groups such as Public Citizen for violating the Federal Advisory Committee Act, which claims the department has been permitting secret input into government decisions by private individuals with little oversight.
Critics have also pointed to the conflict of interest that may be leading DOGE, given that Musk’s companies, Tesla and SpaceX, have huge government contracts. Some people question whether the dual role would not give him undue advantage in private enterprises.

With Ramaswamy’s departure, Musk remains the sole head of DOGE as it embarks on its ambitious mission to cut federal spending by as much as $2 trillion. While Musk’s vision for the department has drawn both praise and criticism, his ability to navigate the political and legal challenges ahead will be closely watched.
Ramaswamy’s exit may simplify the department’s leadership structure, but it also raises questions about the sustainability of Trump’s cost-cutting agenda. As DOGE moves forward, its effectiveness and adherence to ethical standards will likely come under increasing scrutiny.
