Follow us on Google NewsThis transforms the capabilities of AI agents from just a standard support tool into full-fledged software that can handle transactions independently. Ripple’s latest move positions the XRP Ledger at the center of this shift by supporting payment standards built specifically for machine-to-machine commerce.
Ripple Backs Open Standards for AI PaymentsRipple announced that it has officially joined the x402 Foundation as a Premier Member, strengthening its commitment to building payment infrastructure for the next generation of AI-driven applications.
Ripple is proud to join the x402 Foundation as a Premier Member.
As AI agents begin to take on more of the transaction lifecycle, they’ll need a way to pay that’s as fast and reliable as the way they already exchange data. We’ve been helping build that future on the XRP Ledger… https://t.co/eSzTyXBQFm

The company said AI agents will increasingly manage entire transaction workflows, creating demand for payment systems that match the speed and efficiency of digital data exchange. As these independent entities proliferate throughout the Internet, open standards will play a critical role, says Ripple.
Ripple will also join the Foundation’s technical development and governance efforts, and provide support to increase adoption of the x402 protocol.

XRP Ledger Already Supports x402 TransactionsRipple’s major advantage may be existing support that is present for x402 on the XRP Ledger. AI agents can already make payments with both U.S. dollar backed stablecoin RLUSD and XRP.
Designed for Machine-to-Machine CommerceAs opposed to the usual payment flows associated with user registration or manual approval, the X402 payment flow offers payments via standard HTTP request. The protocol utilizes a long-unused status code, HTTP 402 Payment Required, making it easy for applications, APIs, and AI agents to share value as naturally as information.
It’s expected to be used in micropayments, API calls, access of digital content, automated payment for services, and similar activities where transactions can occur thousands of times without human intervention.
Over the past year, Ripple has been building AI features on the XRP Ledger, equipping builders with tools that enable independent payments use cases. Joining the x402 Foundation further allows such efforts to meet with an industry-wide standard instead of a proprietary one.
Linux Foundation Launches x402 FoundationRipple’s announcement comes after the n402 Foundation, also established by the Linux Foundation, went operational. The organization starts with about 40 supporting member organizations, resulting in an open governance mode for the future development of the protocol.
The Foundation is dedicated to not having one company define the payment standard, while enabling technology companies, financial institutions, blockchain networks and developers to co-develop protocol options.
Some of the major payment and tech firms are among the members of the Premier round, including Coinbase, Circle, Cloudflare, Google, Mastercard, Stripe, Visa, Shopify, Amazon Web Services and several blockchain foundations.
As AI agents become capable of purchasing APIs, accessing paid datasets, subscribing to software, and completing digital commerce independently, x402 is designed to provide a common payment layer that works across different blockchain networks and financial ecosystems.
Ripple’s participation expands the role of the XRP Ledger in that vision, positioning XRP and RLUSD as payment assets built for internet-native, automated transactions.
