JPMorgan Asset Management has attached a return range to bitcoin for the first time, projecting a base case of 10% a year for BTC over the next decade while concluding that the asset still has no settled place in a balanced portfolio.
The projection sits in the firm’s 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions, the 31st edition of an annual report that sets return expectations for more than 200 assets over a 10- to 15-year horizon, using data as of Sept. 30, 2026. Besides the base case, the report gives bitcoin a bear case of -11.2% and a bull case of 16.6%, both annualized.

How the Range Was BuiltThe authors blended three models and weighted them by confidence. A model comparing bitcoin’s four-year supply cycle with growth in dollar and global money supply carries 65% of the weight. Another 30% rests on investors treating bitcoin as a complement to gold, and 5% on usage of the Bitcoin network, the only model with a negative base case, at -3.2%. The inputs start from a spot price of $83,000.
In a standalone table pitting bitcoin against core dollar assets, the 10% base case is the highest figure listed. JPMorgan projects U.S. large caps at 7.5%, U.S. small caps at 7.7%, the U.S. aggregate bond index at 5.6%, U.S. high yield bonds at 6.6% and gold at 5.5%. The same table puts bitcoin’s annualized volatility at 55%. Bitcoin is not part of the firm’s main covariance matrices, which feed its portfolio models.
‘A Speculative Asset’The bitcoin section’s authors, portfolio manager Sheena Shah and Dennis Cristallo, head of digital asset strategy at JPMorgan’s Global Private Bank, wrote that they “do not make a case for bitcoin (BTC) as a diversifier in portfolios due to its unstable market correlations.” They described it as “a speculative asset and a hedge against monetary easing.”
“As yet, it lacks a strategic role in portfolios other than as a bet on fiat currency expansion or future asset trading on blockchains,” they wrote.
They wrote that “it is premature to create a 10-year forecast for bitcoin” and said mapping out the possible outcomes “is instructive.” Bitcoin’s portfolio utility “may improve in the future” if correlations stabilize and volatility declines, they wrote. Until then, they advised that portfolios with any bitcoin exposure be “stress tested thoroughly against both bull and bear cases for BTC returns.”
The report pointed to growing investor interest, noting that crypto is now worth more than $2.5 trillion and that about a tenth of clients surveyed for J.P. Morgan Private Bank’s 2026 Global Family Office Report held crypto.
