Polymarket put the odds of a 25-basis-point Federal Reserve rate hike in October at 23%, with $43 million traded, while CME FedWatch pricing ranged from roughly 37% to 44%, and the gap formed as Bitcoin fell below $82,000 following hotter-than-expected inflation data, though it is recovering.
Polymarket vs. CME Fedwatch OddsThe September consumer price index rose 3.7% year over year, above the 3.6% consensus and August’s 3.4%, according to the October 15 market report. Core inflation, which excludes food and energy, also came in above expectations: it increased 0.3% month over month against a 0.2% forecast, and 2.6% annually against 2.5% expected. Gasoline prices rose 9.1% on the month.
The report pushed FedWatch’s October hike probability from about 22% before the release to approximately 37%-44% during Wednesday. Polymarket’s price moved more modestly, from 20% late Tuesday to 24% in the report’s snapshot.
Bitcoin (BTC)24h7d30d1yAll timeThe macro repricing had a direct risk-asset channel: expectations of higher interest rates can lift financing costs and weigh on liquidity, reducing the appeal of assets that do not yield cash flows. Bitcoin fell below $82,000, while Ether dropped about 3% to near $2,430.
The Federal Reserve had raised its target range to 3.75%-4% in September, its first increase since 2023. Its next meeting is scheduled for October 27-28, leaving traders to assess whether the latest data warrants another immediate move or gives policymakers reason to wait.
Earn $50 and Enter $300K Prize Draw on EdgeXOctober or December is The Bigger Test for Bitcoin?Polymarket’s contract asks whether the Fed will raise rates by 25 basis points after the October meeting. FedWatch reflects expectations derived from fed funds futures. Both offer a market-based reading of the same decision.
The calendar complicates the October call. The meeting falls six days before the November 3 midterm elections; UBS described a move so close to the vote as politically untenable, Reuters reported the Fed might wait until December, and Capital Economics considered an October hike possible.
The October report’s own analysis put a fair probability for a hike closer to 35%, above Polymarket’s 24% but below the upper end of the FedWatch range. More important for the broader policy path, Polymarket priced a December hike at 79%: an October hold could therefore mean delay rather than a change in the market’s expectation of further tightening.
That distinction matters to Bitcoin. If the Fed holds in October while December expectations remain elevated, the immediate risk of another hike recedes, but the prospect of tighter policy later may still constrain liquidity and limit any relief in risk assets.
The relationship between policy expectations and Treasury real rates is one relevant macro channel, though these probabilities do not establish how Bitcoin will respond.
Got a Gut Feeling? It Could Pay Out 3.7X on Polymarket
Bitcoin Turns Defensive on Polymarket Rate Hike OddsPolymarket’s Bitcoin contracts reflected a sharp shift in sentiment across the 24 hours to late Wednesday. The probability of Bitcoin reaching $85,000 in October fell from 83% to 63%, while the chance of reaching $87,500 dropped from 56% to 39%. In the opposite direction, the probability of a dip to $77,500 rose from 30% to 37%.
Those prices describe what participants were willing to pay for specific outcomes at that time. A Bitcoin recovery case remains conditional on both price action and the next changes in rate expectations.
The next formal decision point is the October 27-28 meeting; until then, the sharp change in Polymarket pricing from 24% on Thursday to 13.5% on Friday shows why traders need to keep the timestamp attached to every probability.
