Follow us on Google NewsThe Bank of England comes closer and closer to introducing tokenized assets into the mainstream of the UK market infrastructure.
The central bank has launched a consultation outlining how central counterparties, or CCPs, could accept tokenized versions of eligible collateral without creating a separate regulatory regime for blockchain-based assets.
Bank of England Opens the Door to Tokenized CollateralThe proposal concentrates on assets that are or could be already collaterized according to the UK’s CCP.
The Bank says tokenization by itself won’t bar an asset from being accepted. What’s important is whether the collateral remains easily transferable and saleable, has little credit risk and market risk, and can still be valued.
The Bank has reported that tokenization of collateral can facilitate trades of assets across markets and jurisdictions, particularly in meeting margin calls. Faster collateral movement could also reduce operational friction in clearing and support wider adoption of digital market infrastructure.

Same Risk, Same Regulatory OutcomeThe Bank is sticking to a simple rule: tokenized collateral should achieve the same regulatory result as traditional collateral. That means CCPs would need to show that digital representations of assets remain accessible and transferable even during stressed market conditions.
The regulator additionally urges firms to look at the risk associated with technology, custody arrangements and reliance on third-party infrastructure. For instance, tokenized security relying on a bridge that links blockchain records to other asset locations would require knowledge of the consequences of the bridge being compromised.
Stablecoins Could Enter the Conversation LaterThe consultation doesn’t instantly add to the list of collaterals that are eligible. It primarily concentrates on the tokenisation of assets currently allowed under the existing regulations, such as cash, financial instruments, bank guarantees and gold, provided they meet established criteria.
But also the Bank´s position is seeking input from industry on a wider array of assets that may qualify in the future. That conversation also covers tokenized money market fund shares, tokenized gold, and stablecoins, so it’s applicable to the entire crypto ecosystem.
Some digital assets could eventually comply with existing collateral standards, the Bank said, and advised firms contemplating digital assets to reach out to supervisors early on.
UK Pushes Tokenization Deeper Into Wholesale FinanceThe consultation is part of a wider consultation by the Bank of England, Financial Conduct Authority and HM Treasury in the UK. Their mission is to establish a more straightforward rule for tokenized securities and settlement in the digital medium, while fostering financial stability.
It will help foster responsible tokenization while maintaining the resilience of financial market infrastructure, said Deputy Governor for Financial Stability, Sarah Breeden. The consultation will continue through Feb. 12, 2027, and the Bank takes into account industry comments to decide its supervisory strategy.
