Follow us on Google NewsCoinbase is taking derivatives beyond crypto assets with the announcement of the US500 Perps, which offers eligible traders one contract to gain exposure into the U.S. large-cap equity market.
Coinbase Brings 500 Stocks Into One ContractCoinbase said US500 Perps are now live, allowing traders to go long or short on a basket representing 500 of the largest companies in America.
The 500 largest companies in America. Now in a single contract.

The product packages a wide selection of large-cap U.S. stocks into one derivatives contract, instead of trading individual securities or owning hundreds of positions in a portfolio.
According to Coinbase, it was also the first time that U.S. traders have had access to such perpetual-style exposure to the entire U.S. large-cap economy via its derivatives platform.
One of the main highlight features of the product is the crypto traders who know about perpetual contracts who can participate in traders who are long or short and don’t necessarily own the underlying assets.

US500 Perps Add Traditional Markets to Coinbase A New Route Into U.S. EquitiesCoinbase keeps pushing derivatives as a link between crypto trading and the traditional financial markets, as witnessed with the launch.
Although the underlying index of an US500 Perps is the same, US500 Perps enable traders to take a wider market position using merely a single contract.
Going long is a good time to be in the U.S. equity market, which consists of the larger market, when the trader is looking to buy because it should be expected to do so. Going short is a good way to position for a decline in the large-cap U.S. equity market.
It is also just another step in Coinbase’s campaign to allow derivatives trading to become more common with its already established client base as multiple asset classes gain access.
Coinbase Derivatives Handles the ProductUS500 Perps are available on Coinbase Derivatives: Coinbase Derivatives, LLC is registered as a Designated Contract Market with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
But Coinbase also cited the dangers of futures trading. Futures and swaps that are cleared are available via the Coinbase Financial Markets, Inc. business, a Futures Commission Merchant registered with the CFTC and a member of the National Futures Association.
Launch, however, is not direct ownership of the underlying stock but takes place within a framework of regulated U.S. derivatives.
In addition, traders need to differentiate the product from purchasing a fund that tracks the S&P 500 or from individual stocks. A perpetual style futures contract is not a true ownership of the underlying companies and does create derivatives exposure.
Coinbase cautioned that futures trading is fraught with risk of loss and could be inappropriate for all investors. The firm added that the release should not be seen as an investment recommendation or a trades recommendation.
