Follow us on Google NewsCoinbase is launching regulated crypto futures trading for eligible customers in Canada for the first time as it strengthens its derivatives capabilities. The change introduces a new layer of functionality for more advanced traders in Canada who wish to hedge bets or make leveraged trades on the crypto market.
Coinbase Brings Crypto Futures to CanadaThe new offering is coming via Coinbase Financial Markets (CFM), which is a futures commission merchant (FCM) registered with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) of the United States. According to Coinbase, it is the first major crypto-native platform to introduce direct native crypto futures trading in Canada.
The first lineup will consist of 23 perpetual and dated futures for the most popular cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) and Solana (SOL). However, there are contracts that do not expire at all (perpetual futures) and contracts that are set to expire at certain dates (dated futures).
The expansion becomes particularly beneficial for crypto traders, who can now access the market without owning or selling the underlying tokens.

Coinbase is introducing a new “nano” contract for hiring people that requires fewer capital resources. Traders who qualify for the promotion have the ability to go long or short with up to 10x leverage on the trading platform, allowing them more flexibility in positioning around cryptocurrency price action.
Bucks beware, though, that having too much means there’s more risk, as well. Coinbase cautions that losses could be greater than the amount invested in leveraged futures trading, and products may be more suitable for experienced market participants.
Additionally, the firm is launching its day trading products beginning at 0.02% per trade plus $0.11 per contract for a short time.
Crypto Derivatives Demand Continues to SurgeWith derivatives still being a significant component of crypto trading globally, making the move to Canada is an important step from Coinbase. The market is bigger than just conventional token trading, with the estimate that crypto derivatives volume stands at about 4.4 times of spot trading volume worldwide.
What’s new for Canadian investors is that they are now available via a regulated path. Whereas trading derivatives can offer advanced users tools for hedging a portfolio or speculating on market trends, as has long been the case in traditional financial markets, Coinbase counters that such rights can be granted to many traders.
The offering, also announced for launch in Canada, is part of Coinbase’s ambitious effort to create one unified single trading platform for both spot crypto and increasingly complex derivatives trading. Its derivatives activities already include dealing in both international and domestic dated futures and options, as well as perpetual futures.
