Follow us on Google NewsTraditional financial markets are moving toward another crypto-inspired approach to becoming always-on. London Stock Exchange (LSE) has upgraded plans to launch its own trading venue open 24/7 in the first half of the 2027 to cater to retail investors who are increasingly expecting such round-the-clock access.
LSE Adopts a Crypto-Inspired Trading ModelThe new platform will be independent of LSE’s main exchange. The main market will stay open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and the overnight market will remain open from 5:00 p.m. to 7:50 a.m. with a break for end of day processing.
In the first instance, the service will be limited to exchange-traded products (ETPs) such as ETF sectors following the UK and US share markets. The exchange, in a press release, cited the relative ease of beginning investing in ETPs as compared to individual stocks as advantages.
The announcement marks a larger change in the global markets as exchanges begin to adjust to investor habits with digital assets.

Crypto Is Reshaping Investor ExpectationsPlants like Coinbase and Kraken have become the foray for retail investors to engage in cryptocurrency trading round-the-clock. This experience has helped to drive a growing need for ongoing access to traditional financial products, especially when major events in the news or in the marketplace happen.
Competition Extends Beyond CryptoThe LSE’s decision comes as other markets launch similar schemes like Nasdaq, NYSE, and Cboe Global Markets implementing longer trading hours or extending trading platforms. The parallel development of crypto platforms, however, has taken a step further by adding tokenized stocks and 24/7 trading of the securities, making a distinction between traditional finance and crypto totally indistinct.
The CEO of LSE, Julia Hoggett, stated that global Retail Investors, particularly in Asia, were increasingly looking for more trading opportunities in the times when they wish to, regardless of the times of the day when there is a typical exchange trading.
AI and Digital Infrastructure Play a Bigger RoleIn addition to the longer trading hours, the new venue is also being enhanced with agentic AI features that can aid in portfolio analysis, market surveillance, and automated trading decisions. The companies are convinced that AI-driven investing is poised to be more significant in the changing marketplace.
The demand from retail investors for longer trading sessions outweighs the demand from institutional investors, which is still more conservative. The benefits of near-24 hour trading have yet to be realised, according to industry groups.
Despite all of the above, the latest move by the LSE showcasing the impact of crypto on the global financial markets structure. Many analysts believe it’s a differentiator digital asset exchanges offer that will be standard for traditional asset exchanges to achieve to stay competitive in an increasingly digital investment world.
