The company that provisions wallets for AI agents thinks the contest to standardize how those agents pay will not produce one victor. Nitya Subramanian, CEO of wallet-infrastructure firm Para, said on Unchained that x402, the open payment standard from Coinbase, has taken an early lead with independent developers precisely because “it’s been the easiest to set up,” and that ease is “what’s led to the majority of the adoption that we’re seeing on the bottoms up side.”
Her read matters because Para sits underneath many of these systems and, by her own description, takes “a somewhat neutral stance” across the competing rails. Agent payments have become a crowded field: x402 settles high-frequency stablecoin micropayments over a revived HTTP status code, while Google‘s Agent Payments Protocol and the Stripe-and-Paradigm Machine Payments Protocol stake out different ground.

Upgrade Why x402 got there first
On the podcast, she said x402 is “very well set up for micro transactions,” the kind of pay-per-API-call activity that dominates today’s agent-to-agent payments. But she drew a clear boundary around it, noting that “not all agentic commerce will necessarily be in the form of kind of pay per API call.” For larger purchases, she said, the standard is a weaker fit.
A market that splits by transactionThat is where she expects rivals to win share. She said some competing standards “bake in kind of more opinions around things like recourse, disputes,” features that matter more as the dollar amounts climb. Her conclusion was that adoption fragments rather than consolidates. “It’s not gonna be one size fits all,” she said, comparing the outcome to conventional finance: “There’s a time and place for a credit card payment, and a time and place for an ACH.”
The standards themselves are still consolidating governance: Coinbase, Cloudflare, and Stripe formed the x402 Foundation, now moving under the Linux Foundation, even as Stripe backs a competing protocol. For builders trying to pick a rail, Subramanian’s framing is that the question is not which standard wins, but which one fits the payment.
