Follow us on Google NewsParaguay’s banking crisis has seeped into the crypto world as demand for dollar-stablecoins surged following the Ueno Bank digital lending platform’s failure, which took millions of customer accounts offline.
One USDT listing on Bybit’s Paraguay peer-to-peer market asked for 6,942 guaraníes per token, around 13% above the central bank’s Nov. 4 reference rate of 6,144.02 guaraníes per US dollar. The figure is a quoted P2P offer and other quotes were materially different.
Ueno Freeze Pushes Users Toward Crypto LiquidityThe bank, Ueno, had emerged as a big Paraguayan digital bank, with some 3 million users out of a nation of some 6.5 million people. It is also keeping about $850 million of public money, reports Reuters.
The Central Bank of Paraguay began its resolution process because Ueno’s solvency level was below the minimum threshold of 50%. The process was intended to safeguard depositors and stability of the financial system, the regulator said.
Since there has been no access to banks, some have been turning to crypto assets as a quick way to fund themselves.

USDT and USDC Gain Local DemandUSDT and USDC prices in guaraní had climbed some 8% over the past weeks. But he said the boost was not all because of the Ueno crisis. The process started in October, and also indicated the weakening of the US dollar’s value in relation to the guaraní.
This bit of distinction is important as a local stablecoin premium might signify a number of things: banking restrictions, non-dollar payment methods available, banking dollar demand, P2P conditions and liquidity.
However, the Ueno shutdown opened a window of opportunity for crypto holders who would like to access their funds during the period of the traditional deposit delay.
Deposit Payouts Begin While Stablecoins Fill the GapParaguay’s central bank has started payment of deposits from Nov. 5. Those in the first group are eligible depositors whose balance is up to 10 million guaranieres, who have no outstanding loans with Ueno and their account at other financial institutions is active. The protection of deposits in the country comes up to 228.3 million guaraníes per depositor and per institution.
The banking crisis also brought forth a political crisis. Illegalities surrounding Ueno brought about the resignation of President Santiago Peña on Nov. 5 when lawmakers turned to impeachment. Peña denied wrongdoing.

The key indicator for cryptos is the rush for dollar liquidity. In his account of the developments, Tether’s CEO Paolo Ardoino said USDT is a financial lifeline for hundreds of millions of people around the world, while Paraguay is a new example of how stablecoins can become more valuable if access to traditional banking suddenly becomes more challenging.
