According to an insider, the economic coalition of BRICS is considering expanding its membership due to increasing interest from other nations. Anil Sooklal, South Africa’s Ambassador to BRICS, revealed in a recent interview with Bloomberg that the group has already established criteria for potential expansion.
The foreign ministers of BRICS are currently meeting in Johannesburg, and are expected to release a statement regarding the expansion of the group.
Sooklal stated that there is almost a consensus on four key areas, which include guiding principles, standard criteria, procedures for expansion, and models of expansion. While some work still needs to be done on the criteria, the groundwork for expansion is already in place.
We currently lack consensus in a few areas of the global multilateral framework. This is a complicated matter, but I am confident that we will reach an agreement soon enough.
Our foreign ministers are scheduled to meet later this week and provide recommendations to the leaders regarding expansion.
The leaders could make an announcementIt is expected that the leaders will make an announcement about the expansion during their discussions. The focus has been on developing criteria and procedures for expansion since last year’s BRICS Summit in China.
While the type of expansion is ultimately up to the foreign ministers, recent reports suggest that up to 44 countries, including Saudi Arabia, Argentina, and Iran, are interested in joining the coalition.
Sooklal said the following:
“Last year in China what happened was they gave the directive that we need to stop discussing expansion and work on the criteria and so forth.”
The notes continued and said this:
“That’s what we were tasked to do and that’s where it stopped. As part of the mandate, the foreign ministers asked us to expand and look at modalities for expansion, which we have done. And that’s on the table at the moment, but it’s the leaders’ decision on the type of expansion and the number of countries should we decide to expand.”
