Elon Musk took a jab at crypto scammers on Tuesday with a viral meme that quickly caught the internet’s attention.
The image, which showed a statue of the Greek god Poseidon rising from stormy seas, included a fabricated quote meant to mock common crypto scams. “There’s an old saying — If a hot girl texts you about crypto, block him.”
His post had racked up nearly 13m views within hours of going live.
Though clearly not a real quote from mythology, the post plays into a growing awareness of online crypto grifting, where scammers impersonate others, often using fake profiles, to lure unsuspecting users into fraudulent schemes.
Musk’s meme was widely interpreted as a warning against such manipulation, which has become a fixture of the digital asset space.
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) April 22, 2025The billionaire has long had a complicated relationship with cryptocurrency. He has publicly endorsed Bitcoin, Dogecoin and other tokens, often sparking dramatic price movements with just a single tweet. At the same time, he has not hesitated to critique the industry’s more reckless elements, including pump-and-dump schemes.
Musk’s Meme Surfaces During a Crypto Market Still Battling ScandalsMusk’s latest post lands during a period of renewed scrutiny in crypto markets, where high-profile hacks and phishing attacks continue to expose weaknesses in platform security.
In February, Bybit suffered the largest hack in crypto history, losing over $1.5b in ETH. The attack was traced to the North Korean-linked Lazarus Group and involved complex social engineering tactics that bypassed internal safeguards.
The broader crypto industry has struggled with public trust, especially following the collapse of major firms like FTX and several crypto lenders in 2022.
Losses tied to cryptocurrency scams surged 45% in 2023 compared to the previous year, reaching over $5.6b, according to FBI data.
Crypto Faces Scams and Skepticism, but Institutional Backing GrowsDespite the sector’s promises of decentralization and financial freedom, it remains vulnerable to scams, rug pulls and coordinated exploits that have cost investors billions. Yet, the industry is steadily gaining legitimacy as institutional players and regulated platforms increasingly enter the space.
Musk continues to play an outsized role in shaping conversations around digital markets. His posts often walk the line between joke and insight, but they tend to strike a chord. This latest meme, while humorous in tone, carries a deeper message to stay skeptical and avoid falling for obvious traps.
