TL;DR
- The FCA’s application window for Britain’s new crypto regime opens September 30.
- Applications in the main window can be submitted until February 28, 2027.
- The new regulatory regime itself starts October 25, 2027.
Crypto firms operating in the UK are getting close to a date that matters a lot more than another consultation paper.
The Financial Conduct Authority’s application gateway for the country’s new cryptoasset regime opens on September 30, 2026. The main application window runs through February 28, 2027, ahead of the new regime taking effect on October 25, 2027.
That gives firms a fairly long runway, but not an unlimited one.
Once the new framework begins, businesses carrying out activities brought within the regulated perimeter will need the relevant FCA authorisation.
Registration Is Becoming AuthorisationThe change is bigger than simply filling in another form.
Many UK crypto companies currently interact with the FCA primarily through the country’s anti-money-laundering registration framework.
The incoming regime moves much more of the industry into the standard Financial Services and Markets Act structure.
That means firms will be assessed as authorised financial businesses rather than merely appearing on a crypto AML register.
The FCA has already told businesses to begin preparing and has been offering pre-application support ahead of the gateway opening.
For established exchanges and custodians, that preparation is likely to involve governance, financial resources, operational resilience, controls and senior-management responsibilities.
Smaller firms may face a harder decision: build the compliance operation needed to become authorised, restructure the services they offer, or leave the UK market.
September 30 Is The Starting GunIt is important not to confuse the opening of the application gateway with the new rules already being in force.
They are not.
The FCA says the new cryptoasset regime begins on October 25, 2027. Until then, existing rules continue to apply while firms work through the authorisation process.
But September 30 is still significant because it starts the practical transition.
From that point, crypto companies can move from preparing their applications to actually putting them in front of the regulator.
That should also give the market a better sense of which businesses intend to operate under the new UK framework over the long term.
For consumers, little changes overnight.
For the companies serving them, though, the regulatory clock is about to start moving much faster.
