IMF addresses crypto bansThe International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) economists are advocating for proactive measures to manage crypto risks, as a number of countries are implementing crackdowns on the industry.
According to a recent report authored by IMF’s Western Hemisphere Department division chief, Mauricio Villafuerte, and economists Rina Bhattacharya and Dmitry Vasilyev, a complete ban on crypto may lead to negative outcomes.
“While a few countries have completely banned crypto assets given their risks, this approach may not be effective in the long run.”
According to a report on the state of cryptocurrency in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region, the emerging asset class presents challenges for certain countries, despite its potential advantages.
“Crypto asset adoption also presents numerous challenges and risks, particularly for vulnerable LAC countries with a history of macroeconomic instability, low institutional credibility, substantial capital flows, corruption, and extensive informal sectors.”
Economists suggest that instead of completely banning cryptocurrency, nations should develop a policy response that addresses the factors driving the increasing demand for digital currencies.
“The region should instead focus on addressing the drivers of crypto demand, including citizens’ unmet digital payment needs, and on improving transparency, by recording crypto asset transactions in national statistics.”
It really looks like CBDCs are definitely on their way to us. IMF has just announced a single global digital currency in order to eliminate cash. Check out the latest reports about this below.
