US government, Binance and the Thai Police seized a massive amount of moneyA significant crackdown on a multi-million-dollar crypto scam has been achieved through a joint effort by the US government, Binance, and the Thai police.
Binance recently shared the news in a blog post, where they revealed that the criminal network behind the elaborate scheme had targeted novice traders with fake investment platforms.
The Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) of the Royal Thai Police worked together with Binance and U.S. Homeland Security Investigation (HSI) to put an end to the scam that had affected thousands of people in Thailand.
The CCIB arrested five key members of the group, and assets worth around THB $10 billion ($277 million USD), including luxury cars, homes, and land, were confiscated.
So far, over 3,200 victims have come forward seeking compensation since the takedown.
There have been reports of fraudulent activities known as pig butchering scams, where criminals deceive people by gaining their trust and convincing them to invest their money in fake platforms.
They continue to perpetrate the fraud by displaying fake profits and requesting further payments, including fake tax bills.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Thanatus Kangruambutr, Inspector of the Cyber Support Unit in the High-Tech Crime Division at Thailand’s Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau, acknowledges Binance’s significant contribution to disrupting this criminal group.
Crypto scams have caused significant financial damage in Thailand, but through prompt information exchange with Binance Investigations team and other key partners, the criminals have been arrested successfully.
Binance remains a crucial partner in the fight against scams and cybercrimes, and the partnership is highly valued and expected to continue.
