Despite his vocal criticism of the crypto market, former US president Donald Trump holds six figures’ worth of digital assets in an Ethereum (ETH) wallet.
Trump owns a crypto wallet with a massive amount of coinsAccording to a financial disclosure filing with the Office of Government Ethics, Trump owns a cryptocurrency wallet with holdings valued between $ 250,001 and $ 500,000.
Although the wallet is labeled on the document as “(Ethereum),” it remains unclear if his holdings are in ETH, other ERC-20 tokens, and/or other digital assets like nonfungible tokens (NFTs).
Interestingly, despite his hostile stance toward crypto markets, Trump’s ownership of these assets suggests a level of hypocrisy and inconsistency in his policies.
In May 2018, while serving as US president, Trump reportedly directed then-Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to ” go after Bitcoin [for fraud].”
Days after Trump issued the order, Mnuchin was quoted as saying that the Treasury Department will enforce ” very, very strong” regulations on cryptocurrencies to ensure they’re not used for illicit purposes.
It is important that public figures like Trump hold themselves accountable for their actions and words, especially when it comes to matters as complex and rapidly evolving as the crypto market.
Despite previously claiming that cryptocurrencies were a “disaster waiting to happen” and that he owned zero digital assets, Trump launched a collection of NFTs on the Ethereum-based platform OpenSea just weeks after announcing his intention to run for the 2024 presidential election.
It appears that Trump’s stance on cryptocurrencies may have shifted, contradicting his earlier statements about the lack of knowledge surrounding digital assets.
US deficit in the newsAccording to newly released notes, former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers has warned that America is treading on a perilous path due to the nation’s budget deficit hitting $1.613 trillion.
During an interview at the Aspen Economic Strategy Group Summit with Bloomberg, Summers was unequivocal about the US’s trajectory towards an enormous deficit that will surpass its revenue.
He emphasized that future deficit projections are woefully underestimated and that a deficit of almost 10% of GDP is highly likely.
