Follow us on Google NewsLeaders in the cryptocurrency space have been targets for President Donald Trump, who said that Bitcoin and other digital currencies are “thin air,” despite the years of efforts to establish their market value. His family and related enterprises now have a steadily expanding crypto portfolio covering NFTs, meme coins, governance tokens, stablecoins and a crypto treasury.

$TRUMP Drives Most Investor LossesPublic Citizen estimates that Trump-linked crypto products have left investors at least $4.7 billion underwater. The figure covers five products: Trump Digital Trading Cards, $WLFI, the $TRUMP meme coin, USD1 and Trump Media & Technology Group’s digital-asset treasury.
The largest estimated loss comes from $TRUMP, launched in January 2025 shortly before Trump’s inauguration. Public Citizen estimates investors who bought the token and remain underwater have suffered roughly $3.2 billion in largely unrealized losses.
The token peaked at $73.43 the very day it was introduced and has since dropped significantly. The rest of Trump’s token holdings were valued at about $271 million when it analyzed the situation, while he earned approximately $635 million from fees for the meme coin venture.

$WLFI Adds Another $1 BillionThe second-largest estimated loss is from World Liberty Financial’s $WLFI governance token. Public Citizen estimates the damage to be at least $1 billion to investors.
There are 100 billion units of the token and 31.8 billion of them are available for circulation. Trump has reportedly 15.75 billion $WLFI tokens, but such holdings are subject to restrictions that prevent selling them out, straight away.
To date total income amounting to $557 million has been generated from $WLFI token sales, according to Public Citizen. The group also casts doubt on the degree of practical control that the holders of the tokens have over World Liberty Financial’s governance.
USD1 Holds Its Peg While Trump Media Takes a HitUSD1’s stable coin is one that has not caused substantial losses for users – with a dollar (USO) pegged stable coin as is. In August 2026, Public Citizen’s total number of shares valued at $4.1 billion was estimated.
Another big loss category is Trump Media’s digital assets treasure trove. The company has been holding Bitcoin and other digital assets since raising billions of dollars in stock and convertible-debt funding.
Public Citizen makes a rough estimate of $450 million in losses on Bitcoin paper for Trump Media as of June 30, 2026. In July 2019, Trump filings revealed that he mustered at least $1.4 billion in crypto-related income during 2025.
The total figures show, overall, the stark divide between the money for Trump’s crypto businesses and the losses suffered by the investors, according to Public Citizen. The analysis also shows the speed at which Trump’s crypto activity has moved from NFTs and speculation to stablecoins and corporate crypto investments.
