Crypto hacks reach into the billions partly because the industry designed its systems around technology risk and never adopted the basic financial risk controls used in traditional markets, according to Zero Knowledge Group founder and managing partner Austin Campbell.
“Crypto never built itself for security outside of the tech vertical,” Campbell said on Unchained’s Bits + Bips in an episode recorded Nov. 2, adding that he thinks “part of why the hacks have been so bad is that you built a system that was optimized around the tech concerns without ever thinking about the financial risk concerns.”
He spoke four days after Binance lost about $6.34 billion from its hot wallets on Oct. 29, according to the exchange’s Nov. 3 post-mortem. Blockchain analytics firm TRM Labs found that the funds left across ten blockchains, most of them within about 20 minutes. The FBI has attributed the theft to North Korea’s TraderTraitor group, a claim North Korea has rejected.

A Clock on Billion-Dollar MovesCampbell said a hold on large transfers need not involve anyone exercising judgment over each one. It would be a protocol rule stating that “if you’re gonna move a billion dollars, there’s a 24-hour, like, clock on that thing.”
“You don’t just get to yeet that thing out the door,” he said.
Such controls are routine in traditional finance, according to Campbell. “We know what a circuit breaker is,” he said. Drawing on his time as a market maker, he said that when a buyer kept coming back for the same thing, he would widen his quotes rather than keep filling, “not just sitting there and delivering, delivering, delivering.” He called these “101 level risk management things that are not being done in crypto.”
He also said AI currently favors attackers. It “lets people poke holes in all these things faster,” he said, while also helping defenders patch them. “But so far, the classic attacker-defender ladder game, the attackers are ahead.”
Ram Ahluwalia, CEO and founder of Lumida Wealth, said on the same episode that “digital assets as a category has failed to secure their customer deposits,” calling it “incredibly disappointing.”
What Binance Has ChangedBinance has said it will absorb the losses, and it reported on Nov. 2 that it had covered about 95% of the impacted amount. Its Nov. 3 post-mortem gives a higher figure, 98% as of Oct. 31, for the share of impacted token assets replenished. In the first 9.5 hours after withdrawals reopened on Nov. 1, customers pulled a net $3.64 billion, or 2.1% of its $171 billion in assets, the exchange said.
The post-mortem traces the breach to compromised engineers’ machines and an abused internal wallet signing service, as Unchained reported. Its list of fixes includes a rebuilt wallet system, tighter device controls, stronger risk controls on the wallet service and wider AI-based anomaly detection. It does not name a withdrawal delay, cap or timelock, and it says some measures will stay confidential.
