Data breach alertOne of the largest mortgage lenders in the US recently suffered a major security breach, allowing hackers to obtain the personal information of millions of customers.
Mr. Cooper, the home loan services company, disclosed in a filing with the Office of the Maine Attorney General that 14,690,284 Americans had their sensitive information stolen during a cyberattack in late October.
According to the statement, an unauthorized party breached the company’s systems between October 30th and November 1st, obtaining files that contained the names, addresses, phone numbers, social security numbers, dates of birth, and bank account numbers of current and former customers.
Mr. Cooper has stated that it is taking necessary measures to enhance the security of its network and prevent similar incidents from happening again in the future.
The firm is also keeping a watchful eye on the dark web to determine whether the hackers have shared or published the stolen data.
To assist customers in dealing with the potential impact of the data breach, Mr. Cooper is providing identity protection services, including credit monitoring, to all current and former customers for two years, as per a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange (SEC).
Mr. Cooper CEO Jay Bray stated the following as reported by the online publication the Daily Hodl:
“We take our role as your mortgage company very seriously, and there is nothing more important to us than maintaining your trust. I want you to know how sorry I am for any concern or frustration this may have caused. Making your homeownership journey as smooth as possible is our top priority, and we intend to make this right for you.”
