Follow us on Google NewsMUFG is taking a deeper dive into blockchain-based financial infrastructure through a new experiment in one of Japan’s major fixed-income markets. It will see if the Japanese Government Bond (JGB) repo can be conducted onchain from execution to settlement.
MUFG Tests Onchain JGB Repo TransactionsThe proof-of-concept brings together Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities, Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking, and MUFG Bank.
The four companies are working with Digital Asset and Progmat to examine how blockchain technology can support JGB repo transactions. The PoC will use the Canton Network, an enterprise blockchain platform designed for financial-market applications.
The experiment by MUFG is about moving the process onto common digital infrastructure instead of considering each stage as an independent operation.

Automation and 24/7 Settlement Take Center StageMUFG said the PoC will examine whether blockchain can automate more of the transaction lifecycle and enable real-time intraday settlement on a 24/7 basis.
The project is also looking to increase funding efficiency and capital efficiency. The initiative also aims to consider the possibility of information and transaction sharing in the domain of a common infrastructure under the necessary governance and regulation of institutional financial markets.
From Blockchain Infrastructure to Real-World FinanceThe experiment’s aspect is that it centers on any offered monetary product, other than developing another monetary possession that is a cryptocurrency.
Modernizing traditional markets has been another area of interest for banks as they move into tokenisation and onchain settlements. With respect to the securities leg of a JGB repo, blockchain might link them even more tightly in the transactional flow, resulting in greater automations.
