State Treasurer John Fleming announced the initiative on Tuesday, stating that residents can now utilize Bitcoin, Bitcoin Lightning, and USD Coin to pay for select services. The first state cryptocurrency transaction was successfully completed with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
“In today’s digital age, government systems must evolve and embrace new technologies,” Fleming says. “By introducing cryptocurrency as a payment option, we’re not just innovating; we’re providing our citizens with flexibility and freedom in interacting with state services.”
This initiative addresses previous concerns surrounding cryptocurrency adoption by government entities. Through a partnership with Bead Pay, a specialist in cryptocurrency payments, the state converts incoming crypto payments into US dollars before they are deposited into government accounts. This process eliminates the risk of volatility associated with digital currencies, ensuring the state receives stable payments comparable to traditional credit or debit card transactions.
“This unique innovation protects our state from any volatility associated with cryptocurrency,” Fleming added.
Republican Representative Mark Wright of Covington, a long-time advocate for digital assets, lauded the move as a testament to Louisiana’s forward-thinking approach. “I’m excited to see Louisiana further expanding its payment options under Treasurer Fleming,” Wright stated. “I look forward to working with him and others so that Louisiana will continue to be a leader in accepting digital payments.”
The benefits of incorporating cryptocurrency payments extend beyond increased flexibility for residents. The system is designed to reduce fraudulent transactions and enhance overall security, as the state itself does not directly handle cryptocurrency. Jay Sykes, CEO of Bead Pay, highlighted the company’s commitment to streamlining and securing cryptocurrency transactions for government use. “We’re focused on removing the traditional barriers associated with cryptocurrency, such as volatility and fraud risks, making it a reliable option for government transactions,” Sykes explained.
While Louisiana has embraced cryptocurrency for payments, it has simultaneously taken a cautious approach to central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). The state amended its laws to prohibit the use of CBDCs, reflecting a desire to balance innovation with careful consideration of potential implications.
